Rubbing it in
posted by Griffin on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 6:21 PM

It was really frustrating to lose our regular season finale to Creighton, 74-70, and I really dislike Booker Woodfox's smug smile and stupid free-throw windup, so I wanted to rub a few things in. First of all Booker, good job missing six 3-point shots tonight. That really helped the Redbirds stomp you guys 73-49. And that's the second time we've beat you by 20+ points this season. In fact, in games against Creighton this season, we've outscored you 229-187!

I'm just glad we're getting these do-over games against Creighton and Northern Iowa. ISU battles Northern Iowa tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. for the (probably only) NCAA tournament spot available to the MVC. Exciting, huh?

For those not at the tournament, tune in tomorrow on CBS, keep up with the MBB in-game dashboard (with quick access to the WJBC radio coverage), and follow along as the MVC live-blogs from St. Louis.

Go You Redbirds!

Thanks Coach J!

I have to say, Coach Jankovich, when you took the helm of our basketball team last season, I was used to Porter Moser, a coach who would visit Section D after every game to thank the fans. It validated the work we put into each game and reminded us that we're part of the team in a way.

I was really happy about the 6-game winning streak at Redbird Arena that started your ISU career, but kind of hurt watching you retreat to the locker room after each game, without acknowledging us. I wondered if we'd done something wrong.

The subtle disappointment subsided as you led us to an amazing 25-win season, with 16 great home wins, but I always wondered what you thought of us. I mean, some of us are vulgar, unsportsmanlike, inebriated, fair-weathery, but I hope that never clouded the dedication the majority of us have to your team.

When you showed up this morning at 8 a.m. to give doughnuts to everyone waiting in the ticket pickup line, that erased any doubt I had that you valued us. It's quite the gesture to buy food for that many fans, but to simply have shown up and said "Hi" at the Alamo, which must be out of your way, was enough to communicate an important message:

We're all part of the same team.

Thank you, Coach Jankovich. I'm really proud you're a Redbird.

Tuesday will be my last regular-season home game as an ISU student. Let's destroy Northern Iowa, and rock the MVC tournament! (I'd also love to see us break that 25-game record.)

Let's Go 'Birds!

ISU breaks out of their road funk!
posted by Griffin on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 9:39 PM

Phew! In a 60-57 overtime win over Southern Illinois in Carbondale, ISU snapped their 4-game losing streak on the road. Interestingly, our only other in-conference road win was also in overtime, against Missouri State. We're still undefeated (12-0) at home, and hope to add to that Sunday against Indiana State at Redbird Arena at 6:05.
